AI Glasses in 2026: 16 Million Units and the Rise of Camera Glasses

Editorial chart of smart glasses shipments with the camera segment highlighted

Global AI glasses shipments are on track to pass 16 million units in 2026, according to industry forecasts. The category that was a niche experiment two years ago is now compounding: IDC counted 4.296 million units shipped in 2025 Q3 alone, up 74.1% year over year, and Counterpoint measured 83% growth in 2026 Q1.

The engine of that growth is no longer the category as a whole — it is camera glasses. Shipments of camera and camera-audio models reached 2.994 million units in 2025 Q3, up 287.5% year over year. A camera on the frame turns AI features into something a shopper can demonstrate: first-person capture, live streaming, visual search and translation-by-photo. For an OEM buyer, the question is no longer whether to build a camera SKU, but when.

Camera Glasses Are Not Replacing Audio — They Follow It

Audio glasses remain the largest shipping segment in smart eyewear, which is why most brands enter with an audio frame first and add camera capability in the next generation. The two segments are sequencing, not competing: the audio SKU builds distribution and the camera SKU builds margin. Our smart audio glasses reference platform covers the entry tier, while the AI camera glasses line adds 8MP/12MP capture with 1080p livestream on the same wearability-first frame family.

Who Is Winning, and What Their Specs Tell You

BR-01

Meta Ray-Ban

Sold 7 million+ pairs in 2025, roughly 3× the prior year. Retail scale is proven; the category is past early adopters.

BR-02

XREAL

Display route leader: a 171-inch virtual screen with an X1-class chip at 3 ms latency and native 3DoF. Display hardware is commoditizing into reference designs.

BR-03

Xiaomi

Took 28% of China shipments in 2026 Q1 on a 27.6 g audio frame. Chinese brands set the weight and price bar for mass-market audio SKUs.

BR-04

iFlytek

Bundles 122-language translation with a 40 g camera frame. AI features are the differentiation layer; the hardware underneath is standard.

The pattern across all four: hardware is converging, and the fight has moved to software, weight and price. For a buyer that means the OEM no longer has to invent the product — the AR display and translation reference platforms already carry the hard-won engineering, and the brand layer is yours to add.

Why One Chinese City Makes Half the Category

One of every two AI glasses shipped worldwide is made in Dongguan. The city's smart-glasses shipments grew more than 800-fold in under two years, and the full chain — ID design, optics, SMT, assembly, testing and certification — happens without the product leaving the city. Chinese manufacturers as a group hold a 45% global share, and the Shenzhen side of the region supplies the optics and software engineering.

EMS Eyewear sits inside that chain — our factory in Dongguan runs the full in-house process, and our OEM/ODM services exist so you buy the ecosystem, not a single assembly step.
